Specific Need

The tornado that struck Westmoreland in April 2024 damaged the building housing the horizontal baler, damaged the baler, and destroyed several trailers. Until the building for the horizontal baler is functional, it has not been feasible to collect recyclables throughout the county.  There is a fee for hauling and off-loading loose recyclables to a collection point which would have quickly depleted the PRC funds. 

Therefore, the specific needs are as follows: 

1.  This donation will provide for any potential adjustments to the horizontal baler once the 3-phase wiring is installed. 

2.  Public awareness that the county recycling collection sites are open once again.

Mission

The mission of the Pottawatomie Recycling Committee (PRC) is to raise funds for the county recycling program.  The PRC is a group of environmentally aware citizens whose goal is to maintain the quality of the environment of Pottawatomie County and to minimize recyclables going into landfills throughout the State of Kansas.

Profile

Locations of recycling trailers for collecting recyclables of cardboard, newspapers, magazines, aluminum cans, and glass are in Onaga, Wheaton, Olsburg, Wamego, St. George, and Westmoreland. Once a trailer fills at any one site, it is moved to the Noxious Weed Department where all commodities except glass are baled.  These bales are then sold at Bison Ridge Recycling in Manhattan.  These funds provide the operating cost for the recycling trailers in Pottawatomie County.

For outreach environmental education, the PRC sponsors an Earth Day poster contest in the county schools as well as two scholarships to county high school Seniors and one scholarship to an adult furthering their education.  A key component in the scholarship selection process is how the applicant and their family have shown their concern for the environment.  PRC also takes part annually in the Pottawatomie County Fair.
