Friends of Wabaunsee Cemetery

Specific Need

We continue to repair broken and leaning stones.  We are currently repairing stones that are leaning due to deteriorating bases.

We also are seeking funds to repoint our historic gate.  This gate was designed by artist Maude Mitchell, the daughter of Capt. Wm. Mitchell, of Mt. Mitchell fame.

Mission

This historic cemetery is sacred ground holding 133 veterans, 62 of which are from the Civil War.  Also interred here are 10 founders of the Beecher Bible & Rifle Church, 5 conductors on the Underground Railroad, Peter McCutcheon, who was called the White Slave, and many early pioneers who were state and county office holders, helping to make Kansas a free state.  It is our mission to preserve and protect the monuments of these Kansas pioneers and educate the public about them.
