Specific Need

Help us create a StoryWalk® for our community!

What is a StoryWalk®?

  • A StoryWalk is a book that has been taken apart and presented page by page around a path to promote reading, exercise, and family time.
  • The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
  • The StoryWalk® can be located in any space that is accessible to children and families.  A walking or biking path is needed for optimal use throughout all seasons.  The trail can range from a half-mile to one mile total distance with about 40 paces between each of the 18-20 posts. This allows for flexibility in the length of the book as well as making it appropriate for all ages and abilities. Some sites that have been considered by the City of Wamego are the City Park, The Wamego Recreation Complex, and Morton Park.  Ideally, the chosen location would be a green space maintained by the city that would benefit from an additional amenity for our community members.

The Wamego Public Library is collaborating on this project with:

  • The City of Wamego
  • The Wamego Parks Department
  • Wamego High School Peer Chamber
  • Riley Construction
  • Howell Lumber

The Wamego Public Library enriches lives, promotes literacy and builds community by bringing together people, information and ideas.

The Wamego Public Library strives to work in partnership with local businesses, non-profit agencies, and the community at large.  The books selected for the StoryWalk® Project would reflect traditions and events unique to our town.  Books would be rotated throughout the year to maintain interest.

  • Jan/Feb - Winter Theme
  • Mar/Apr - Tulip Festival
  • May - Spring
  • June - Summer Reading Theme
  • July - Boom Town
  • August - Back to School
  • September - Fall
  • October - Oztoberfest
  • Nov/Dec - Holiday Theme

The StoryWalk® Project would have a positive impact on our community by providing activity options for various groups such as Boys and Girls Club, Scouts, local Churches, Schools and Child Care Programs. A ribbon cutting event, Wamego Public Library Family Nights, and advertising for City programming would increase visibility of our community and a weatherproof guest book would allow us to see the number of visitors enjoying our very own StoryWalk®!
