Pawnee Mental Health Services, Inc.

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

S.T.A.R.S. (Strength, Teamwork, Attitude, Relationships, Self-Esteem) Camp is a summer camp put on by Pawnee Mental Health Services for children age 7-17 who suffer from Serious Emotional Disturbances (SED).  Children with SED have conditions such as attention deficit disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, bi-polar, anxiety disorders and other challenges due to a variety of causes such as physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect. Like a typical summer camps, children attending S.T.A.R.S Camp will have the opportunity to participate in horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, completing low ropes courses, riding mountain bikes, wall climbing, crafts and much more. For many of the children, S.T.A.R.S. Camp is the ONLY summer camp they can attend due to the symptoms of their disorder.

For the past 17 years S.T.A.R.S. Camp has predominately been funded through the Pawnee budget. The children’s families pay no cost for their child to attend camp because most of the children attending camp come from families who meet federal poverty guidelines so the families cannot afford to pay for their children to attend S.T.A.R.S Camp.  However, over the past few years it has become increasingly difficult for Pawnee to make overall revenues cover expenses, due to reduced state and federal funding, reduction in Medicaid reimbursements and an increased number of clients who are uninsured or underinsured. Therefore, in an effort to continue to provide children who suffer from SED the same summer camp opportunity that other children have, we are seeking philanthropic enthusiasts to help provide financial support for this project.
