Wamego Community Garden provides education and the opportunity to grow healthy organic food for yourself, your family and your community.
Profile
In 2014 our Community Garden was expanded to a two acre permaculture food forest with a shade shelter, greenhouse, and rain gardens. Garden leaders can provide education on how to use the the tools, and the best way to grow, harvest, cook, or preserve the food that you helped grow. Members have access to the whole 2 acre garden to harvest what their family needs. We garden year round. We plant an annual garden, have many perennials, a greenhouse, and an orchard. Membership is required, but it is a free membership.
We provide over 11,000 pounds of food for the community! What our members don't use, we donate to the local food banks.
The land is provided by the First Baptist Church. Water and mulch are provided by the City of Wamego. We are a 501c(3) organization; all gifts and donations are tax deductible. Estimated cost to maintain the garden is $1200 per year.
What can you find growing at our garden? Tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, squash, peppers, onions, peas, radish, lettuce, beets, cabbage, kale, spinach, swiss, chard, okra, regular and sweet potatoes, thornless blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, goji berries, gooseberries, elderberry, ruhbarb, asparagus, herbs, apple, cherry, pear, plum, peach, persimmon, pawpaw, hazelnut.....
